The budgies are here!

The new Aussie Aviary now open at Franklin Park Zoo

At the Aussie Aviary guests have the unique opportunity to see budgies up-close in the new free-flight, interactive exhibit. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

Franklin Park Zoo’s new Aussie Aviary provides a memorable, interactive experience for Zoo guests, who are able to stroll through the exhibit space among hundreds of brightly-colored budgies. Budgerigars, affectionately called budgies, are also known as grass parakeets and are a variety of small slender parrots with long, tapering tails. As part of the experience, guests have the opportunity to purchase seed sticks and feed the birds as they walk through the free-flight exhibit.

Budgies are mostly ground-dwelling birds native to central Australia and, because of their popularity within the pet trade, can be found in nearly every country.  In the wild, these birds are greenish in color and have black and yellow markings but, because of their popularity as home pets, they have been bred for color variations beyond those traditionally seen in the wild. The new budgie exhibit, located in the Zoo’s Outback Trail, measures about 30 feet wide by 50 feet long and approximately 25 feet tall.
