Please note: Volunteers, Zoo employees and local emergency responders will take part in a routine animal escape drill on Wednesday, April 26 at Franklin Park Zoo, and Thursday, April 27 at Stone Zoo. These routine drills are an important part of our preparedness training. While the drill is occurring, guests will be able to participate in the evacuation portion, and may be asked to move to certain areas within the Zoo for a brief period of time (not to exceed 10 minutes). Forest Garden Design Day

Franklin Park Zoo

Sunday, May 7, 12:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Pre-Registration Required

Calling all permaculture designers and enthusiasts! Join us in the planning of the Zoo’s new forest garden. Participants will review the basics of food forest design before diving in to detail with planning polycultures and building off of sketches. Whether you’re an experienced designer adding to your portfolio, or a novice seeking to increase your skills, all input is welcome.

Be prepared to get dirty! This will be a hands-on workshop and participants will put their newly acquired knowledge into practice as they work in the Organic Garden Project at Franklin Park Zoo. Participants will enhance the soils in the Zoo’s own forage forest garden by spreading and inoculating mulch with beneficial fungi.

Offered in partnership with the Boston Food Forest Coalition, this spring series of workshops and talks focus on urban sustainability and permaculture principles. Workshops are designed to provide participants with hands-on opportunities to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice.
