About the Chinchilla

Geographic Range:

Class: Mammalia
Order: Rodentia
Family: Chinchillidae
Genus: Chinchilla
Species: lanigera

The chincilla is named for the Chincha people of the Andes who wore its fur. Chinchilla means “little chincha.” The chinchilla has thick, soft fur and a bushy tail. Its dense coat protects it from the cold, fleas, and other pests. To prevent fungus growth and fur rot, the chinchilla bathes by rolling in the dust instead of using water.
