Please note: On Wednesday April 24 at Franklin Park Zoo and Thursday, April 25 at Stone Zoo, volunteers, zoo employees and local emergency responders will take part in routine animal escape exercises. While the exercise is occurring, guests have the opportunity to participate in the evacuation portion, and may be asked to move to certain areas within the Zoo for a brief period of time (not to exceed 10 minutes). These exercises are an important part of our preparedness training, and we appreciate your participation and understanding. If you have any questions about what to expect, please don't hesitate to contact us at 617-989-2000 or info@zoonewengland.org.

Training a red kangaroo

Kangaroo and keepers

In celebration of National Zoo Keeper week, we asked keeper Maggie Sawyer about her job at Franklin Park Zoo:

"I'm the primary red kangaroo trainer, and I love working with our oldest female kangaroo. The training program is relatively new, but I've been able to accomplish a lot, and it’s been fun learning and training with her. Through the training, I've been able to do pouch checks along with the staff from the Zoo hospital.

I always wanted to have a career working with animals, and this job allows me to do that in an environment that also promotes education and conservation. This job has let me do and see a lot of things that I would not have been able to otherwise."
