Gorillas on the Line...Answer the Call!

From February 1 - September 24, we're participating with zoos and aquariums across the globe in the “Gorillas on the Line” mobile phone recycling challenge. Our collective goal: 20,000 devices recycled to help save gorillas in the wild!

By recycling your phones at Zoo New England, you help protect animals like Western lowland gorillas that live in areas where cell phone materials are mined (learn more below). Help us by donating your electronic device at Franklin Park Zoo or Stone Zoo, or better yet, start your own collection drive!

We’ll work with your group, class, team, organization or workplace to join the recycling challenge. The team that recycles the most devices will win a one-of-a-kind painting from our gorillas!

Steps for starting your own cell phone collection drive:

  1. Register your team for the challenge. Once registered, we'll provide you with information to receive your free shipping labels. Register below.
  2. Spread the word! Design a collection box, distribute flyers, or create social media posts to promote your conservation efforts. See below for downloadable printables.
  3. Collect! All items must be collected by Sept. 24, 2020. Though you're welcome to include any electronic device listed below, only cell phones will be counted in your total.
  4. Ship phones directly to Eco-Cell, our recycling partner, postmarked on or before Sept. 24, 2020. The group with the most cell phone donations will win a priceless work of art from one of Franklin Park Zoo's western lowland gorillas! The winner will be announced in early May.
  5. Keep going! Recycling doesn't need to end along with this challenge. You can always donate used electronics at either zoo any time we're open! Better yet, extend the life of your cell phone by committing to using it a few years longer. THANK YOU for your joining our commitment to conservation!

What to Recycle

You can collect and recycle any of the following at either Franklin Park Zoo or Stone Zoo any time we're open, but only cell phones will count towards the Gorillas on the Line challenge:

  • Chargers

How Cell Phones Impact Gorillas

Cell phones contain coltan, a material mined from the western lowland gorilla's natural habitat. Because of the major cell phone demand, the Congo’s coltan mining business has increased rapidly in recent years. This has led to dramatic destruction of the natural habitat of great apes, bringing this species closer to extinction. We urge you to extend the life of your cell phone by committing to using it a few years longer, and recycling it when you upgrade. When recycled, old electronics and chargers can have a major impact on the lives of gorillas!
