About the Seba’s Short-Tailed Leaf-Nosed Bat

Geographic Range:

Class: Mammalia
Order: Chiroptera
Family: Phyllostomidae
Genus: Carollia
Species: perspicillata

Seba’s short-tailed leaf-nosed bats take their name from a spear-shaped protuberance of varying sizes on their noses called a noseleaf. Found in tropical rainforests, Seba’s bats live in colonies of several hundred to several thousand, roosting in caves, mines, rocks, culverts, hollow trees, logs and buildings. Bats are the only mammals that fly, and their ability to hang upside down allows them to easily launch into flight.
