What exactly is a scat dog, and how are they helping to save vulnerable species in Africa? Find out when you join Chris Bartos, an assistant curator at Zoo New England’s Franklin Park Zoo, for a talk titled Conservation Dogs for Scat Detection. The talk will detail her adventures in training border collie Finn, a member of the Cheetah Conservation Fund’s census team (pictured right). As a part of this group, Finn is trained to sniff out cheetah scat in order to track the movements of these vulnerable cats in Africa.

A longtime dog trainer in her personal life, Chris’s experience training Finn for scat-sniffing in 2007 was a first for her. She will discuss the process, challenges and rewards of training a detection dog for such an important cause, and how the data gathered contributes to the bigger conservation picture for cheetahs.

This program is part of the East Bridgewater Public Library’s Adult Education Series. The discussion will be geared toward adults, but young adults and students are welcome.
