Geographic Range:

range map

Class: Aves
Order: Gruiformes
Family: Gruidae
Genus: Antigone
Species: vipio

The white-naped crane resembles other Asian cranes but is set apart by its striking slate-grey plumage. These cranes breed in Russia, Mongolia and China but spend the winter months further south on the Korean peninsula, in southern Japan and in China’s Yangtze River basin.

White-naped cranes are losing habitat to agriculture, development and pollution. There are currently only 6,000 of these birds left in the wild.
