Volunteer Opportunities Make a Donation

 

Volunteers are important members of the Zoo New England team, helping in many ways including animal care assistance, exhibit interpretation, event support, and much more. Opportunities are available for three different sessions, and applications for a specific session must be received by the deadline below. Applicants will interview with the Volunteer department and may be required to conduct a second interview in the department they're applying for.

Session 1:

January through April
Deadline for Applications: December 15

Session 2:

May through August
Deadline for Applications: April 15

Session 3:

September through December
Deadline for Applications: August 15

  • Have a positive attitude and strictly adhere to our policies, procedures, grooming and customer service standards
  • Complete an online application, including references
  • Successfully complete interview/s
  • Attend and complete Orientation
  • Become a Zoo member *

Teen (14+)

Ambassador


Location: Stone Zoo

This volunteer opportunity is for motivated, independent, gregarious individuals that enjoy answering questions, interacting with guests, and have a passion for animals and conservation. Ambassadors assist with admissions, guest services and education. Ambassadors must be 16+.

Petting Zoo Aide


Location: Stone Zoo

Petting Zoo Aide volunteers provide quality care to the animals that reside in the Petting Zoo. Additionally, volunteers monitor guest interaction with Petting Zoo inhabitants and enforce Zoo polices to keep everyone safe. Petting Zoo volunteers must be 16+.

Junior Keeper Aide

Location: Franklin Park Zoo

Junior Keeper Aides works in the Children’s Zoo helping to prepare diets, cleaning up after the animals, mucking stalls, observing animals, interacting with guests, etc. Junior Keeper Aides must be 16+.

Wild Bunch


Location: Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo

Wild Bunch volunteers are needed to assist with special events throughout the year. Volunteers help set up events, staff activity stations for guests of all ages, and help with event break down. Wild Bunch volunteers must be 14+.

Jr. Zoo Teen

Location: Franklin Park Zoo

The Jr. ZooTeen program is a creative and meaningful volunteer opportunity for highly-motivated youth ages 11 to 14. This program offers both a hands-on learning atmosphere as well as several mentoring relationships with senior staff members. Ambassador


Location: Stone Zoo

Commissary


Location: Franklin Park Zoo

Assists Commissary staff in daily routine and provides quality, professional support to the staff as needed in diet preparation for Zoo animals.

Education Interpreter


Location: Stone Zoo

Interpreters encourage the public to think and learn about animals, habitats and conservation by helping them understand exhibits, enrichment and animal behaviors in an engaging way. Interpreter volunteers must be 18+.

Gardener

Gardener volunteers assist in the preparation, installation and maintenance of Zoo New England park grounds. Gardener volunteers must be 18+.

Keeper Aide

Group Volunteers

Location: Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo

Looking for a great team-building opportunity? Want to show your support for a community organization with an important mission? Group volunteering offers fulfilling opportunities for community groups and businesses to express their support of Zoo New England's mission. Projects include helping with special events, grounds keeping and special projects. Groups are also encouraged to share their special talents.

Ages 14+
Please note: There must be one 18+ chaperone for every three participants under the age of 18.

Event Volunteers

Interested in volunteering, but unable to make a weekly commitment? The Wild Bunch might be the perfect opportunity for you. Wild Bunch volunteers are needed to help with special events. Opportunities involve assisting Zoo staff with our many special events for guests of all ages. Wild Bunch volunteers must be 14+.

Job Shadowing (14+)

Location: Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo

Gain a better understanding of zoo careers by applying to participate in a one-day job shadow experience at Zoo New England!

Application Requirements:

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 14 years of age and currently enrolled in high school.
  • The shadow must adhere to program rules and policies, be responsible, and exhibit good judgment and common sense.
  • Written permission from the shadow’s parent/guardian is required before students can participate in a Job Shadow experience.
  • Shadows must provide proof of a negative Tuberculosis test within the year prior to the scheduled shadow date.
  • All job shadow candidates must provide at least one letter of recommendation.

FAQs:

What do Job Shadow participants do?
The shadow will spend a minimum of four hours and a maximum eight hours following an employee through their normal workday, helping perform their daily duties or observing when an activity requires. Job Shadow opportunities are available with zookeepers and education staff. Students will not be left alone with any animal at any time. 

Is there a fee for the Job Shadow program?
Yes, there is a $50 fee. Please make checks payable to the

When are Job Shadow positions available?
Job Shadowing positions are available September through May, Monday through
Saturday for a maximum of eight hours (9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.).
