December School Vacation Week

Wild fun awaits this December vacation week!

Individual sessions are offered to participants in age groups 6-7 and 8-10 years old. Taught by Zoo educators, classes include hands-on activities, discussion, animal encounters and behind-the-scenes experiences. Each program includes progressive program topics focused on teaching students about animals and their interactions within their ecosystems.

Franklin Park Zoo

Our theme for December vacation week is Winter Magic! Be sure to check out each individual day’s description to get a better idea of what your participant will be learning about!

Session Descriptions:

Cool Innovations: One of the biggest challenges for most organisms in the winter is staying warm, and animals have gotten this down to a science! Participants will explore why it snows, what animals do to keep warm, and how animal dens have inspired human shelter. Get ready for a day of cool, hands-on exploration!

Winter Masterpieces: From microscopic snowflake structures to the large and beautiful Aurora Borealis, winter landscapes are filled with many colors and designs. Participants will make observations about the natural world and create their own masterpieces inspired by what they learn.

Snow Sleuths: Have you ever wondered where animals go in the winter? We'll talk about tracking, migration, hibernation, and brumation. Participants explore how animals survive the colder weather and leave with a better understanding of identifying what animals may overwinter in their neighborhoods.

Winter Storm Inclement Weather Cancellation Policy:

We take safety seriously – for participants, Zoo visitors, staff and for our animals. In the event of an incoming winter storm, Zoo staff may decide to cancel a vacation day/private program. In addition to our education team, the Zoo’s snow team keeps a close eye on the impending storm. The decision may be made to open the Zoo as usual, have a delayed opening, or close for the day depending on the severity of the storm and the subsequent clean up. We reserve the right to cancel a program by 8:00am on the day of the program. If we decide we must cancel a program day due to situations beyond our control, we will issue a credit for your program, to be used towards another one of Zoo New England’s education programs.
