Galapagos Active Adventure

October 6 - 15, 2024

Join Zoo New England and Great Beyond Adventures on an active, once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Galapagos to learn about wildlife, history, and culture.

Itinerary

The trip will begin in Quito, Ecuador, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From there, you’ll jet off to San Cristobal, Galapagos, where you’ll snorkel with sea lions and around volcanic formations that have become havens for diverse bird and fish populations.

Next, you’ll head to Isabela Island, where you’ll bike along pristine white sand beaches, mangrove forests, and lagoons teeming with bird life, sea lions, and iguanas. You’ll snorkel through lava tunnels with Galapagos penguins, and take in gorgeous panoramic views after a hike up the Sierra Negra Volcano.

Finally, you’ll head to Santa Cruz Island, where you’ll hike with giant tortoises and see rare blue-footed boobies.

Throughout the 10-day trip, you’ll stay in charming luxury accommodations and experience a variety of delicious local cuisine.

Expertise on Board

During your trip, you’ll be joined by Zoo New England’s Vice President of Animal Health and Conservation, Dr. Eric Baitchman.

Eric Baitchman, DVM, DACZM, received his veterinary degree from Cornell University in 2000, completed a zoological medicine residency at the Wildlife Conservation Society/Bronx Zoo, and began as an associate veterinarian with Zoo New England (ZNE) in Boston, MA in 2004, where he has remained ever since. In 2009, he became the Director of Veterinary Services, and in 2017 took on the role of Vice President of Animal Health and Conservation, overseeing development of a new conservation department for ZNE.

Eric has developed innovative conservation and research initiatives through partnerships with key institutions in Boston, such as working with the Broad Institute on medical genomics for zoological species, and with the Harvard Medical School on a One Health Clinical Elective for Harvard medical students.

Uganda Gorilla Safari

July 8-15, 2025

Join Zoo New England and Great Beyond Adventures on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Uganda to see primates in their natural habitat!

Itinerary

After arriving in Entebbe, Uganda, you’ll split time between two national parks rich in biodiversity, culture, history, and wildlife viewing opportunities: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to an estimated 400 mountain gorillas, along with 120 other mammals including elephants and antelopes, and 340 species of birds. You’ll spend three days at the Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, where you’ll have opportunities to observe mountain gorillas and learn about local Batwa culture.

Then, you’ll head to Queen Elizabeth National Park, the park famous for tree-climbing lions and stunning views of the Kazinga Channel and the Ishasha Plains. Here, you’ll track chimpanzees and have the opportunity to see a diverse array of wildlife such as lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, baboons, and more.

John's Linehan's lifelong passion for animals and wildlife conservation led him to the University of Maine, where he earned a degree in Wildlife Management. After graduation, he embarked on his career, working with a variety of animals and species while progressing through the ranks of Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo before assuming the role of President & CEO in 2002. Over the years, he has ensured the welfare of the animals under the Zoos' care, built a dedicated staff, and significantly expanded the organization's role in education and conservation efforts.
