With its slate-gray plumage and distinctive white nape, the white-naped crane stands out among Asia’s cranes. These birds breed across Russia, Mongolia and China before traveling south for the winter, gathering in places such as the Korean Peninsula, southern Japan and China’s Yangtze River basin. But their remarkable journey is becoming increasingly difficult as wetlands and other habitats are lost to agriculture, development and pollution. With only around 6,000 white-naped cranes remaining in the wild, protecting the places they depend on throughout their annual migration is critical to their survival.
