Please note: On Thursday, April 25, Stone Zoo volunteers, employees and local emergency responders will take part in a routine animal escape exercise. While the exercise is occurring, guests have the opportunity to participate in the evacuation portion, and may be asked to move to certain areas within the Zoo for a brief period of time (not to exceed 10 minutes). These exercises are an important part of our preparedness training, and we appreciate your participation and understanding. If you have any questions about what to expect, please don't hesitate to contact us at 617-989-2000 or info@zoonewengland.org.

5th Quarter of Learning

Zoo New England is an ongoing partner in the 5th Quarter of Learning program, co-managed by Boston Public Schools and Boston After School & Beyond. ZNE’s expertise in science education is used to enrich rising fourth and fifth grade students’ academic learning, integrating the Zoo environment into Math and English Language Arts lessons.

Through full-day learning experiences at Franklin Park Zoo, students have the opportunity to improve and practice valuable social-emotional learning skills such as teamwork, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.

Research has found that about two thirds of the achievement gap between low income students and high income students is due to their access, or lack thereof, to summer opportunities. The 5th Quarter is the city of Boston's way to mitigate this and try to make sure that every child in the city has access to the opportunities that they need to succeed and flourish.

The Zoo provides a unique setting for STEM-focused learning in a fun environment, and we’re committed to ensuring that children of all backgrounds have the opportunity to experience and learn about the wonders of the natural world through active exploration, inquiry, and hands-on discovery.
