Location: Children’s Zoo Meeting Barn (View map)
Takes place rain or shine.
Included with general admission, but registration is required.
Led by historian Rory Browne, this tour will uncover connections between the Zoo’s animals, landscapes and America’s past, from the colonial era and the founding of the nation to westward expansion, scientific discovery and the dawn of the modern age.
As you explore the Zoo, you’ll discover surprising links between wildlife and history. Did you know that Thomas Jefferson was gifted a prairie dog by the Lewis and Clark Expedition? Discover the history connecting animals like camels, zebras and gorillas to iconic figures including George Washington, John Adams, and others who helped shape the nation. Along the way, you’ll learn how Franklin Park itself reflects changing chapters of American history through its historic architecture, gardens and landmarks.
The tour begins in the Children’s Zoo Meeting Barn, where you can fill your water bottle, pick up an America 250-themed giveaway, and access a custom map to follow along during the tour. From there, we’ll head out to explore Franklin Park Zoo’s 72 acres on foot. This outdoor walking tour covers much of the Zoo, so come ready for adventure! We strongly recommend water, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, hats, and weather-appropriate clothing so you can stay cool and comfortable while you explore.
Brought up with the sounds of lions roaring and sea lions barking in nearby London Zoo, Rory Browne is an Oxford University-trained historian who now specializes in the history of zoos and animals. Since moving to Massachusetts in 1991, he’s been actively involved with Zoo New England, bringing students from local colleges to the zoos and sharing his expertise through talks and guided tours. Dr. Browne currently serves on Zoo New England’s Board of Directors.
